What Is DBT

DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, was created by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the 1980s to help people who had been failed by the existing mental health system.

Originally these were clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, a pattern of unstable self-image and difficult interpersonal relationships.

People with BPD typically struggle with thoughts of death and suicide and may engage in various forms of self-harm. Dr. Linehan devised a set of life skills to help her clients learn to manage their emotional experiences and change their behavioral patterns to be more effective.

Since its creation it has been researched with many populations. DBT has been shown to be effective for people with PTSD, eating disorders, substance abuse, and other difficulties. DBT is generally a present-focused treatment geared towards achieving meaningful change and creating a life worth living.
